Course Description
Often the environment, science and art are seen as separate, or even opposing topics. In actuality, there is a great deal of overlap and interconnection between them all. At the very foundation of each, is our interpretation and observations of the world, a search for understanding, knowledge and a quest for beauty. How can artists contribute, communicate, or critique scientific approaches? How can science benefit from the creative practices of artists? How do the skills and approaches of scientists, artists overlap with one another, and what is unique about each? How can artists and scientists come together around our most pressing environmental concerns? In this lecture-based course we will look at specific artists, scientists, scientific concepts and how they have aided each other. Students will engage with a variety of images and texts through lectures and discussion.
