Course Description

This course explores key historical and social events that shaped the field of psychology; the history of ideas such as "the mind"; when and how psychology became a science; life histories of psychologists; and how ideas about what is "normal" shape and are shaped by psychology. The course considers the major problems, ideas, and schools of thought which form the basis of modern psychological theories and methods. Ideas of structuralism, idealism, functionalism, psychoanalysis, behaviorism, will be discussed as they relate to the development of psychological theory. Original sources will be read and discussed.
