Course Description

This course is from the perspective of people of African ancestry and introduces students to major social and cultural events in the African American experience, from the Reconstruction Era to the present. Integrated learning strands include an overview of Black progress movements in the contexts of race, equity, gender, sexuality, Black feminism, and social justice in the contemporary Black experience. This course documents the Black societies and culture that resisted against racism, helping students understand the theories and motivations behind race-based social patterns that forged U.S. political, social, cultural and economic relations from 1865 to the present.
