Course Description
Visual Culture studies the construction of the visual in art, media, technology, and everyday life from a global perspective. By engaging with visual traditions and practices from diverse cultures-including Japan, China, India, Jordan, Mexico, and beyond-students explore how different societies conceptualize and construct the visual. They learn the tools of visual analysis to investigate how visual depictions, such as YouTube videos, advertisements, and art exhibitions, convey ideologies and cultural values. This interdisciplinary approach critically examines the institutional, economic, political, social, and market factors that shape the production and reception of contemporary visual culture, fostering an understanding of its global interconnectedness.
