Course Description
"The major theme of this course is domestic and affective labor. Using the provocations of Silvia Federici, among others, this course will question the relatively recent discursive (re)turn to the ‘tradwife.’ One major concern of this course is whether this is truly a ‘return,’ or whether economic conditions require work that was, in recent memory, often outsourced to lower class and frequently racialized women to then ‘return’ to their middle- and upper class (often also racialized) counterparts. Another major concern will be to dispel the myth that women were ever, for the most part, liberated from such duties and expectations. This latter point will be made not only through analysis of the ‘second shift’ but also the vicious displacement and subsequent proletarianization of women globally, particularly in South Asia. The reading of theory will culminate in the analysis of either a literary or filmic text.
